All drugs are potentially harmful and the risks associated with taking drugs increase during pregnancy because of potential harm to the fetus and mother. Despite this, American women consume on the average of 4.5 different drugs during pregnancy, and 80% of these medicines are not prescribed by doctors.
Heavy medicine use is not surprising when one considers the number of drug messages we see and hear every day. As a rule any drug that a mother takes will reach the fetus. The safety of most drugs now on the market has never been tested with respect to the fetus. Effects on infants are often discovered only after birth.
Risks may be low-as low as 1 in 10,000 to 50,000 infants-but the consequences may be severe. Many medications change when stored over time and become harmful with age. More than 200 drugs pose risks to a developing fetus. In some instances, however, they may be needed for serious disease.
Some physicians recommend a low dose of aspirin to women who have experienced hypertension during previous pregnancies or to first-time mothers whose sisters or mothers have had that condition. Talk to your doctor about whether you should take it. Also avoid immunizations during pregnancy. This is especially true for rubella immunizations. Women who receive rubella immunizations should avoid becoming pregnant for 3 months afterwards. Aside from this discontinue allergy desensitization treatments during pregnancy.
It is impossible to avoid all infections during pregnancy. Immunizations before pregnancy can prevent some infections that are quite harmful to developing infants. Any exposure to an infection, particularly illness that causes rashes, should be reported to your physician or nurse.
