Autoresponders are computer programs, which automatically answer e-mail messages that have been sent to them. They can be very simple or very complex. These were first created as an auto reply among mail transfer representatives who discovered that they were unable to deliver a particular e-mail message to a given address.

These auto replies created bounce messages like "we are unable to deliver your e-mail message to ... because ..." responses. The autoresponders, which are used today, however, have to be very careful in not generating e-mail backscatter, as this could result in their autoresponses considered as e-mail spam.

Responders are commonly often used to serve as effective e-mail marketing tools, as using them could immediately provide additional information to potential customers and clients who are interested in the products or services of a company. These auto messages also allow business owners to be able to follow-up with the same customers at pre-set time intervals.

Autoresponders are also considered to be the key to operating and managing "opt-in" campaigns. This would mean that the person who would be receiving the email message has asked to receive it. And so, you would be able to get the best results, as you are able to share useful information with people who are already interested and have asked for it.
